This Saturday, 14 June, is Global Wellness Day, a chance to pause, step back, and gently reconnect with the parts of life that nourish us.
This year’s theme is #ReconnectMagenta, a beautiful reminder that wellness is about more than routines or goals. It’s about connection. To nature. To others. To community. And, most importantly, to yourself. It’s easy to lose that connection in the rush of daily life. We get caught up in roles, responsibilities, expectations. But when we pause and truly listen inward, something powerful begins to unfold.
Why Self-Awareness is the Gateway to Habit Change
One of the most overlooked but powerful pathways to habit change is self-awareness. When we begin to pay attention to what’s happening inside; our thoughts, emotional responses, and automatic behaviours, we start to uncover what’s truly behind them. We become aware of the beliefs we’ve picked up over time, the narratives we repeat, and the habitual ways we react without realising. That kind of awareness can be profoundly transformative. Because once we can see a pattern clearly, we open up the possibility to change it.
Self-awareness affects everything from how we handle stress to how confident we feel in everyday life. Without it, we often internalise stress, take things personally, or fall into old coping strategies that no longer serve us. But with even a little awareness, we can begin to pause, take a breath, and respond more intentionally. We start to feel more grounded and less at the mercy of external circumstances.
Understanding the nature of your own experience, recognising that thoughts aren’t necessarily facts, and that emotions can come and go like waves can completely shift how you relate to challenges. You begin to feel less overwhelmed and more anchored. Rather than being drawn into every stressful situation, you develop a sense of space and perspective. And in that space, you find choice. The choice to decide what happens next. Whether you reach for that bottle of wine to soothe your stress. Whether you eat the chocolate bar you’ve been resisting, knowing it won’t give you the happiness you're really craving. From that space, habits often begin to change naturally, because the urge, the need, or the desire behind them starts to dissolve. Ultimately, self-awareness opens the door to creating a life that feels more aligned with your values, your needs, and your true self. It’s not about becoming someone new, it’s about coming home to who you really are underneath it all.
An Invitation to Reflect
This Global Wellness Day, I encourage you to take a few quiet minutes to ask:
Who am I?
Not your name or job title. Not your to-do list. Not what others expect of you.
Just: Underneath all of that - Who am I?
You don’t need a perfect answer. Just the willingness to explore that question is a beautiful and powerful place to begin. If the idea of re-connecting to self resonates with you, book a complementary coaching session with me to explore it further.
